Shadow Horse Rescue story: Rescue to Redemption

A Light Named Shadow
I had only been following Horses Without Humans Rescue Organization for a short time when Shadow arrived. When I saw this beautiful, emaciated mare struggling with a catastrophic injury to her leg, I was heartbroken. I watched a video of her trying to walk and literally cried.
Something about Shadow stayed with me. The rescue was facing an incredibly difficult decision, but they saw something in her eyes that made them believe she wanted to live. I believed it too, and I wanted to help give this sweet mare the chance she was fighting for.
This is the story of how Shadow became part of my heart, how my mom and I eventually traveled three hours to meet her, and why Victoria’s Naturals is now giving back to the rescue that refused to give up on her.
The Journey to a Second Chance
Shadow’s road was anything but easy. Her injury was catastrophic, and the rescue tried different treatments before surgery became her best hope. Finding the right surgeon was challenging, and there was never a guarantee that the surgery would succeed.
But the rescue, their supporters, and everyone who believed in Shadow kept fighting for her.
Shadow eventually underwent surgery at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Kadic. The surgery went well, but that was only the beginning of a long recovery. She remained at UF for 35 days before finally coming home to Horses Without Humans, where she continued months of stall rest and careful rehabilitation.
There were painful moments along the way, including a difficult cast change video that broke my heart to watch. But there were also milestones that gave everyone hope. Her follow-up visits were encouraging, and her doctor was pleased with her progress.
Then came the video the rescue called “One Year Miracle.”
The mare whose life had once been hanging in the balance was thriving.
That was Shadow’s miracle.
Visiting Horses Without Humans Rescue Organization
My mom and I drove three hours to finally visit Horses Without Humans Rescue in person. Fanny had already alerted the team that we were on our way and would be arriving soon, so we were greeted almost immediately.
Sadie was the first to welcome us. I recognized her from the videos of her walking Shadow, which made meeting her in person especially meaningful. The team took the huge box of healthy treats we had brought for the horses and directed us toward Yvonne, who was down at the dressage arena.
Yvonne greeted us so warmly, and after helping my mom onto the golf cart which meant so much to us. We were then invited to watch some dressage training. Of course, we were thrilled. It was such a lovely way to begin our visit.
Then the wonderful music started playing, and two beautiful horses were being trained in the arena. Both Mom and I were in awe as we watched these beautiful animals perform such wonderful movements.
After the dressage training, we continued our tour of the property by golf cart. We left the dressage arena and traveled farther up the property into the rescue portion, where Shadow and many of the other rescued horses reside. We first stopped at several of the fenced paddock areas, where we met many of the horses and I was able to give them treats along the way.
Then came the moment I had been waiting for — we went to meet my sweet Shadow girl. Seeing her again, this time in person and knowing that she was safe and cared for, was incredibly special to me.
When I finally saw her, the emotion was overwhelming. I literally had tears in my eyes. There she was—my sweet Shadow girl, beautiful with her silky, light-colored coat, wearing the custom halter I had sent her.
Seeing her wearing something I had chosen especially for her made the moment even more emotional. After following her story and watching her journey through videos, finally standing there with her in person was something I will never forget.
The team took Shadow out of her stall so we could spend some quality time with her. I fed her carrots and peppermints and gave her lots of kisses. My mom fed her carrots too.
I kept telling her, “I am so happy to meet you, Shadow. You are so beautiful.”
After we took some pictures, the team brought Shadow back to her stall. Of course, I stopped again for more treats and more kisses.
I had waited a long time for that moment. After following her story, worrying about her, supporting her, and watching her fight her way back, finally standing there with her was overwhelming.
Shadow wasn't just a horse I had followed online anymore.
She was right there in front of me.
From there, we continued down the entire row of stalls, stopping at each horse and giving them treats. We then made our way to another group of horses in a fenced grazing area, where I fed them treats as well.
Sadie continued taking us all around the rescue, showing us so many wonderful horses. I believe we met at least 50 of the approximately 75 horses they board and care for.
With every horse, my heart seemed to grow a little fuller.
Along the way, I gave a few sample testers to the lovely ladies who walked with us through the stalls and helped take pictures. I also gave a balm to Sadie. We came across Eva, who lives on site, and I was able to give her a balm and some cards as well.
By the time we were ready to leave, my heart was completely full. We had come to see Shadow, but we were leaving caring about so many more horses—and the wonderful people who care for them every day.
When we finally made our way back toward the area where we had started, I had to make one more stop.
I needed to say goodbye to Shadow.
I gave her one last treat—an apple—and spent a few more moments with her. And then it was time to leave.
My heart was literally sad as we walked away. After waiting so long to meet her, I wasn't ready for our visit to be over.
I had come to Horses Without Humans because of Shadow.
And I left with a heart full of love for so many more.
Eventually, we made our way back toward the dressage arena where Yvonne was. I gave her her balm and told her that one was for Fanny, along with a few samples for her daughter and other members of the team.
We had brought these special gifts to give to the wonderful people who had made our visit so special. I had carried that box with us on the golf cart through almost the entire three-hour visit, in nearly 100-degree Florida heat, hoping everything inside would survive the weather!
Looking back, that little box of lip balms traveled almost as much as we did that day—and somehow, it made its way through the entire rescue with us.

The Importance of Giving Horses a Second Chance
Giving a horse a second chance means more than simply keeping them alive. It means restoring dignity, trust, and joy. It means giving them the opportunity to live a life free from fear and pain.
Shadow’s transformation shows what is possible when people are willing to care, fight, and believe that a life is worth saving.
Supporting rescues also helps bring awareness to responsible horse ownership and the challenges so many horses face. Most importantly, it reminds us that compassion can make a difference—and that sometimes, giving one horse a chance can change the hearts of many people along the way.

I came to Horses Without Humans Rescue because of Shadow, but I left loving so many more horses and feeling an even deeper respect for the people who care for them every day.
That is why Shadow’s story will always mean so much to Victoria’s Naturals.
Shadow was given a second chance. Her story reminds us of the difference compassion, care, and a chance can make.
